Hum
Helen Phillips
Situated in the near future, May and her family live in a city ravaged by climate change, pollution, and relentless forest fires. Hums—ubiquitous AI-driven humanoid robots—have claimed most jobs, making it nearly impossible for people to earn a living. When May is replaced by the very AI she helped train, the family must survive on Jem’s erratic income from the "gig" tasks no one else wants, like emptying mousetraps and cleaning out rotting refrigerators. As parents they are stressed and their children are dissatisfied. May is determined to reclaim her family. Obsessed by memories of an untroubled childhood spent in the woods, she yearns for her children to experience the scent of pine needles and the feeling of bare feet on soil. She decides the children need to spend time in real nature among living trees, birds, and clean air, if only for a few days, no matter what the cost. Can May bridge the emotional distance between them, or must she accept that her role as wife and mother has become obsolete?
