Loved and Missed
Susie Boyt
The book is about Ruth, a teacher in her fifties with a drug-addicted daughter, Eleanor, who has just had a baby, called Lily. Eleanor comes in and out of Ruth’s life, while Ruth goes through a difficult time. Eleanor regards leaving Lily with her mother as out of the question, and it is only after the death of another drug addict that Ruth hands her daughter an envelope with cash and takes Lily home to raise her in her own way. The engaging narrative is told from Ruth’s perspective and follows the relationship between Ruth and Lily. Though heartbreaking at times, this book is also humorous and very worth reading.
