Victory City
Salman Rushdie
As a young girl Pampa Kampana is inhabited by a goddess, who gives her exceptional longevity and the ability to perform miracles. She can transform into other living beings and grow a great city, full of citizens, from special seeds. First ruling directly, and later through her descendants, Pampa Kampana sees how her city develops into a powerful empire, with great conquests and important allies. When, after more than two centuries, she finally reaches the end of her life, she composes a long poem in which she describes her history and predicts the fall of her city state. She also predicts that, after the fall of the empire, she and her entire history will be forgotten for four hundred years. The book tells the story according to the poem, which has apparently been found in an obscure place. A tale of history mixed with mythology, spun by Rushdie in his well-known style.
