Marnie, a self-employed copywriter working from home, feels isolated because all her friends have moved out of London. Nearly divorced Michael, a geography teacher, is an experienced walker. They are both invited by their mutual friend Cleo to join a small group of vaguely associated people embarking on a coast-to-coast hike from St. Bees in the West to Robin Hood’s Bay in the East. Most of the members intend to walk for a few days and then return home. But when very bad weather strikes, most of the group members decide to leave earlier. Feeling she has to last the weekend, Marnie reluctantly joins Michael for the rest of the journey. They then get on better and better, and get used to each other’s company, with both enjoying the ever-changing scenery, and Marnie discovering that she can handle the physical challenges of the walk better than she had expected. After deciding not to do the last two days of the walk, they part in York: Marnie returns to London and Michael goes to meet his ex-wife to finalise the divorce. A few months later, however, Michael comes to London for work and they decide to meet again. Their friendship is then reignited and deepens.
